What is it about?

This was the first study of the weather on Venus to include its mountains in the computer model.

Why is it important?

Venus has an extremely thick atmosphere, with a surface pressure that is 90 times the surface pressure on Earth, and dense clouds that obscure its mountains. Interestingly, one of the tallest mountain ranges on Venus, Ishtar Terra, is located near its north pole. Our computer simulations exhibit a large eddy that shows up as a 2 degree Celsius temperature anomaly, located high above Ishtar Terra, which could be observable with a high-resolution infrared camera.

Perspectives

As far as I am aware, the thermal anomaly we predicted to reside high over Ishtar Terra has not yet been ruled in or out by observations.
