What is it about?

Granular soil, in a form of dry particles, can display a phase transition from a solid-like state to a fluid-like state (e.g., under slope failure or avalanching). We introduce a concept of particle volume-potential field, in analogous to the molecule chemical-potential, and developed a mathematical model for the prediction of the jamming density of binary mixtures of granular soil. The model has been validated by experimentally measured results.

Why is it important?

It is hoped that this study will provide a better understanding of the link between the phase transition and the size dispersity of granular soil. The concept of volume-potential field is useful for the explanation of large geophysical flow, such as large landslides.
