What is it about?

Siblings are an important part of children's home learning environment. However, there is an ongoing discussion whether it is advantageous or detrimental for children's intellectual growth and school achievement to have older or younger siblings. The parental resource dilution explanation (e.g. Downey, 2001) is concurring with the confluence model (Zajonc, 2001). The presented analyses are based on the Austrian sample of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011 and speak for the existence of a tutoring effect (i.e. learning by teaching of older siblings) which is a unique feature of the confluence model.

Why is it important?

The confluence model is a complex explanation for changing effects of sibling constellation on achievement test scores with age. It is important to understand the exact nature of sibling constellation effects since neglecting them might lead to biased results in national trend studies of achievement (Zajonc & Mullallay, 1997).

Perspectives

This article in my view is an example for the potential that International Large scale Assessments (ILSA) have for basic research via secondary analyses.
