What is it about?
A hybrid technique involving simultaneous molecular visualization of large pieces of cloned DNA and microscopic chromosome visualization showed that bovine chromosome 13 includes segments evolutionarily related to human chromosome 10 and 20.

Why is it important?
The relatedness of chromosomes among mammals is of interest to both basic and applied research, e.g., chromosome and genome evolution, and the identification of genes affecting specific developmental, molecular or biochemical traits.
Perspectives
Visual information such as presented in this paper can be an important avenue for gaining insight into relatedness and differences among genomes. Now, in the genomics era, it still serves as an important avenue of validation, since all methods have some propensity for error or being mis-interpretated.
