What is it about?

We tested how three common methods for estimating crop evapotranspiration (ETp) impact the performance of a distributed hydrological model in a Belgian river basin. By comparing model results using each ETp method, we found that the model’s streamflow predictions were more sensitive to the choice of ETp than its internal soil or groundwater parameters, and that using locally adjusted ETp coefficients improved accuracy.
