What is it about?

We have described herein the synthesis of two novel polymers derived from 2,6-diethynyltriptycene (DET). These polymers have interesting properties such as high solubility and thermal stability as well as high char yields. In addition, these polymers "fluoresce". We have further explored host−guest chemistry of these polymers with Fullerene (C60). In presence of C60 as a quencher, fluorescence quenching of our polymers is observed.

Why is it important?

We have introduced the use of 2,6-diethynyltriptycene (DET) as a new building block in polymer chemistry. Polymers synthesized from DET (as monomers) fluoresce although the chromophores are nonconjugating. For the first time, we have studied interaction between triptycene based polymers and C60. Potential applications of these polymers are as high temperature fluorescent coatings and towards synthesis of novel fullerene-based polymer nanocomposites.
