What is it about?

In this paper, we report the synthesis of biodegradable hydrogel nanoparticles using a RAFT inverse miniemulsion cross-linking polymerization process.

Why is it important?

We have developed a methodology for RAFT inverse miniemulsion polymerization of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) to produce biodegradable cross-linked hydrogel nanoparticles. This was the first successful description of the use of DMAEMA in an inverse miniemulsion RAFT polymerization or inverse miniemulsion reversible deactivation radical polymerization in general.

Perspectives

The biodegradable hydrogel nanoparticles synthesized in the work are potential candidates for encapsulate and controlled release of siRNA or other biomolecules. Therefore, the data and methods presented in this paper contribute to the progress of using the RAFT process in nanomedicine applications.
