What is it about?
This paper is about the preparation of polymer particles loaded with heavy metals (lanthanides) that are used as highly specific 'markers' for detection, using a technique known as mass cytometry. The metal atoms and their characteristic molar mass help identify the number and type of species present in each experiment.

Why is it important?
These materials have important applications in disease diagnostics, for example in counting specific protein biomarkers or antibodies. In this paper we demonstrate that a move away from fluorescent based analyte detection methods is possible, given the high sensitvity of mass spectrometry detection and wide resolution range.
