What is it about?

Understanding the way organic semiconductors crystallize is important if they are to be used in commercial devices. Here we used functionalised graphene supports to allow us to characterize the way a fluorinated phthalocyanine derivative arranges in thin films.

Why is it important?

By carefully choosing the material to use as the support in TEM experiments (Graphene Oxide here) we can characterize the crystal structure of organic materials without damaging them. This methodology allows us to produce a huge amount of information about our system in the lab setting rather than at national or international facilities usually required for similar experiments.
