What is it about?

In this work we prepared and characterized supramolecular gels formed by the L-aminoacids triptophan and isoleucine in the Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) composed by choline chloride/phenylacetic acid 1:2. All the component of the gels are non-toxic and the preparation of the DES only require mixing of components, avoiding the need for synthetic and purification steps. The two gels showed good mechanical stability and significant difference in morphology.

Why is it important?

This is the first work reporting the preparation of supramolecular gels in Deep Eutectic Solvents, opening the way to the obtainment of gel phases in these solvents. Considering that the components of these materials pose no environmental risks, this materials can be suitable especially for applications in which low environmental impact is mandatory.
