What is it about?
We designed an insulin-linked luciferase that is secreted from pancreatic beta cells to allow rapid, high-throughput measurements of insulin secretion. We used this system to screen over 6000 natural product fractions from ocean bacteria and discovered many modulators of insulin secretion.

Why is it important?
We anticipate that discovering new chemicals that increase or decrease insulin secretion will lead to greater understanding of the pathways and signaling that underlie pancreatic islet beta cell function. These chemicals may also lead to new therapies for diabetes.
