What is it about?

We have shown how to generate ordered arrays of micro-droplets by condensation of water onto a surface with micropillars.

Why is it important?

The ability to control the spatial positions of condensed droplets allows the creation of microdroplet arrays and unlocks the possibility of engineering the position of condensed droplets on a surface. The droplet array is here created solely by structuring the surface, which is of particular interest as it allows for easy upscaling of fabrication using techniques such as nanoimprint lithography, injection molding, and roll-to-roll extrusion coating.

Perspectives

Possibly this technology can be useful for the formation of microdroplet arrays in biochemical applications.
