What is it about?

The amount of computerized information that organizations collect and process is growing so large that the term Big Data is commonly being used to describe the situation. Big Data tools are already having an impact in chemical industry and research, and this paper discusses how Big Data might be incorporated into undergraduate chemical education.

Why is it important?

We believe it would be very helpful to incorporate at least an introduction to Big Data into the undergraduate curriculum. At a minimum, students should learn a number of best practices that we discuss and especially appropriate metadata so that users will be able to understand what the data is and how it was collected.

Perspectives

Over the past few years I have personally met with many professors and students who know they have to do "something" to improve their handling of data but are not sure what. While this article cannot be exhaustive in its guidance it gives a general overview of what is going on in Big Data and hopefully useful guidance about some steps that can be undertaken to become educated and start to improve the situation.
