What is it about?

It has been thought for more than 20 years that peroxynitrite forms an adduct with one carbond dioxide; this aduct then forms radicals, trioxidocarbonate(1-) and nitrogen dioxide to an extent of about 30%. We could never confirm such a large yield.

Why is it important?

1. We show that the reaction of peroxynitrite with carbon dioxide is an equilibrium. 2. Some radicals are formed upon reaction of the adduct with the second carbon dioxide, but at a physiological carbon dioxide concentration the yield is just less than 1%, relative to peroxynitrite. 3. this yield is much less than the 30% found in the literature. 4. Carbon dioxide catalyses the isomerisation of peroxynitrite to nitrate and is therefore beneficial.

Perspectives

The reactivity of the adduct should be investigated. Unfortunately, I am retired ..... Given that the 30% radical yield is firmly entrenched in the literature, I wonder our findings will have an impact.
