What is it about?

A combination of relatively rigid macrocycle of the studied calixarenes and their long flexible substituents capable of H-bonding gives almost infinite number of polymorphs depending on the preparation procedure. The hydrophilicity of one of these calixarenes can be switched on/off by consecutive treatment with different organic solvent vapors and drying, which gives hydrophilic or hydrophobic polymorph.

The results give insight into the structural factors of polymorphophism, which can be extrapolated to pharmaceuticals.


The efficient procedures of polymorph screening can be elaborated giving discovery of more polymorphs than crystallization from melts and solutions
