What is it about?

We tested combinations of herbicides that were newly labeled for cowpea, and some with potential for use in cowpea across 6-location-years. Of the recently labeled herbicides, fomesafen or sulfentrazone are best applied one week before planting cowpea (with or without S-metolachlor), followed by an appropriate postemergence herbicide. Of the candidate herbicides, flumioxazin has best potential also when applied preplant.

Why is it important?

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), a.k.a. southernpea, is a leguminous vegetable crop of major importance, in the southern USA, Africa, and other parts of the world. Weeds in cowpea are managed mainly with herbicides. The most widely used ones are S-metolachlor, imazethapyr, and selective grass herbicides. Weed shifts and weed resistance are becoming a problem.

Perspectives

Weed management in cowpea can be improved by using summer cover crops prior to cowpea planting, rotating it with an appropriate crop that is kept clean, narrowing the rows to hasten canopy closure, and planting another crop after cowpea to prevent weed proliferation.
