Why is it important?

This is the first time that health service use and adequacy of treatment are examined in general population living in the largest metropolitan area in Brazil. This information can help to estimate and promote proper planning of service needs of mental illnesses for general population living in Latin America.

Perspectives

The great majority of individuals with an active mental disorder in São Paulo were either untreated or insufficiently treated. Only 10% of those in need were treated. Awareness and training programs to general medical professionals are recommended to improve recognition, care take and referral to specialty care when needed. Proper integration among healthcare sectors is advocated, por example, strengthen the primary care physicians to diagnosis, treat and refer cases of severe mental disorders.
