What is it about?

To improve weed management in organic wheat production systems through crop rotation design, rather than tillage, I compared the competitiveness of several rotational crops with wheat well-suited to semiarid growing regions. Alfalfa, winter peas, winter triticale, and spring barley all demonstrated competitiveness with particular weed species.

Why is it important?

Knowing the differential competitive abilities of certain crops with certain weed species, an organic grower could design a wheat-based crop rotation with rotational crops to compete with the weeds on their own farm.
