When researching critical and controversial issues, one should be prepared for those supporting results to agree with them and those who are opposed to find problems with methods, analyses, and interpretation.

Why is it important?

In the competitive world of scientific publishing, it is important to carefully choose where to invest one's energy. It is essential to do research on critical issues, yet one must be scrupulous in following accepted scientific methods in order to make the most convincing arguments possible in reporting results.

Perspectives

One often has doubts following publication, and in this case on later reflection I hope that this article does not discourage other scientists from addressing the most important and compelling issues of our time.
