What is it about?

We compared four systems that differed in initial cover crop and soil management on arthropod communities during the three-year transition to organic production in a feed grain rotation.

Why is it important?

Organic growers cannot use synthetic insecticides and rely on biological control by arthropod natural enemies to control pest insects. We showed that production practices in both current and previous years affect the community of beneficial, ground-dwelling arthropods. Therefore, in the transition to organic production, growers could manage the transition in ways that conserve or enhance natural enemy populations.
