What is it about?

John Dewey visited China at a time of great political chaos and heated debate about the future direction for education in China. Initially widely endorsed, his views were later widely condemned. The article describes some of the protagonists in this evolution and considers the possibilities for a renewal of Deweyan ideas in contemporary Chinese education.

Why is it important?

It facilitates an appreciation of how Dewey's progressive ideas were perceived in the Chinese environment. It enhances our understanding of Dewey's progressivism to see its place outside the North American culture in which it developed.

Perspectives

Working on the paper allowed me to develop an appreciation for Chinese cultural aspects of education and, thereby, to broaden my sense of the issues that arise for Chinese students who come to study in North America today.
