This paper describes how the redesigned AP U.S. History course and exam encourages students to develop their historical thinking skills when studying the Gilded Age and Progressive Era periods of the U.S. History survey course.

Why is it important?

The redesigned AP U.S. History course is part of an important effort to rethink how to make history education both more meaningful and rigorous to high school students. The new course framework gives teachers considerable flexibility in how to approach the periods of U.S. history, while a new exam design rewards students who can reason and write in depth about the past.

Perspectives

This paper is part of a symposium on the redesigned AP U.S. History course in the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. These are particularly challenging periods to teach in the traditional survey course, but can be made very rich and rewarding for students and teachers alike.
