Why is it important?

Butler's life is an exemplar of failed manliness in America's Gilded Age.

Perspectives

Butler fascinated me since I came across his famous gun battle with ex-Confederate mercenaries in an Alexandrian restaurant. Most U.S. diplomats avoid shooting folks with a Colt revolver, I thought it would be useful to see why Butler was different.
