What is it about?

This paper has information gained from a review of previously published research articles, all focused on bad deaths to try to understand what a bad death is.

Why is it important?

Bad deaths need to be avoided, but as many as 1/4 are seen as bad by family members or nurses and other caregivers.

Perspectives

Unrelieved pain was found to be the most common reason for people to think a bad death happened. Many other reasons exist as well, so it is important to plan how to have a good death and how to avoid a bad death. It may be that dying at home is best, and it may be that pain and other symptoms need a home care nurse to help or a palliative care team.
