This is an attempt to draw together all the major strands of a very complex viral disease. This paper focuses on the disease in mammals. A second paper will focus on the disease in birds

Why is it important?
I do believe that some sort of link exists between Bornaviral infection and mental illness. This review may encourage new thinking in this area.
Perspectives
Writing this review drew together multiple issues and concepts and to a certain extent began to make sense of the disease. However it also pointed out obvious gaps in our knowledge that need to be explored,
