What is it about?

This paper documents and gives an explanation to the observed levels of education of migrants and the evolution of inequality in migrants' origin country. It connects the economic growth of the country and the wealth constraints that migrants face to explain the effects of migration on inequality in their origin country.

Why is it important?

It is important because it helps to understand the effects of migration in the origin countries of migrants. Moreover, it also explains that migration increases when there are more resources in low-income countries, as pointed out by previous authors, and characterizes the type of migration in terms of the level of education of migrants. In the first stages of development migrants are mainly highly educated and contribute to increase inequality, but in more advanced stages of development the less educated migrate to destination countries and differences in inequality can be reduced. It also explains the type of immigration that destination countries expect to receive depending on the level of income of source countries of immigrants.
