In this paper I elucidate the origins of analytic philosophy in the work of Frege and Russell and explain the revolutionary significance of their methods of logical analysis.

Why is it important?

Analytic philosophy is now the dominant philosophical tradition in the world, and there has been increasing concern with understanding its historical origins and philosophical foundations.

Perspectives

In elucidating the role of analysis in the work of Frege and Russell, I stress, in particular, the importance of what I call 'interpretive' analysis, rooted in their development and use of modern logic.
