What is it about?

An editorial article about electronic (electroacoustic) music history. A review of articles about electronic music history in the journal Organised Sound is given, and it is noted that these are rather few. A literature review of electronic music history books (outside Organised Sound) is given, covering the period 1960 to 2016. The articles in the 'Alternative Histories of Electroacoustic Music' issue of Organised Sound are summarised, and a plea for further research in electronic music history is made, particularly using the methods of science and technology studies.

Why is it important?

We outline a range of new approaches and subject matter for the study of electronic music history, as a follow-up to the 'Alternative Histories of Electronic Music' conference, which has been described as 'a signal moment in the growth of electronic music studies'. The literature review offers a new analysis of a range of electronic music history literature from 1960 to 2016, as well as providing the first review of historically-oriented articles in Organised Sound.
