Why is it important?

MAOIs are highly effective antidepressants, the risks which have been historically overblown. They have unfortunately been withheld from many patients who may have benefitted from their use.

Perspectives

I experienced a prolonged episode of major depression for which I was hospitalized twice. I was given at least ten different psychotropic medicines and a course of ECT, all without significant relief. Within days of beginning the MAOI, Rx Parnate, my depression lifted and I have been well now for four years. I wrote about my experience in STAT NEWS, "Don't cast aside an effective antidepressant just because it is old." Sue Trupin RN
