What is it about?
This studies describes the function and development of the heart of preterm infants

Why is it important?
Using novel techniques, we found that the preterm heart shows changes in preload and afterload, but not in contractility. This means cardiac function is already at developped level even directly from preterm birth.
Perspectives
We emphasize the importance of excluding common disease and treatments in any reference value study, as they can cleary affect numbers The preterm heart changes its size and function with increasing volume load, just like adults do. This model could be of interest to adult investigators.
