What is it about?

The application of the extended Optimum MultiParameter analysis (OMP) to a large dataset collected during four oceanographic cruises in 1994-2001 was used to obtain a quantitative description of the water masses on the continental shelf and to analyse their circulation.

Why is it important?

The characteristics of AASW (Antarctic Surface Water), CDW (Circumpolar Deep Water), MCDW (Modified Circumpolar Deep Water), LSSW (Low Salinity Shelf Water), DISW (Deep Ice Shelf Water) and HSSW (High Salinity Shelf Water) were defined. Their role in the ventilation of the deeper layer of the continental shelf and in the water mass exchange with the Southern Ocean was analysed.
