What is it about?

Two outbreaks of gastroenteritis affected schoolchildren visiting a remote mountain farm. Both outbreaks were caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium parvum. We wanted to find out to what extent the schoolchildren would infect their family members on return home, and collected stool samples and conducted phone interviews with their household contacts.

Why is it important?

We found secondary transmission to family members. This highlights the important of basic hand hygiene measures to prevent spread in families. Since we collected samples from all family members irrespective of whether they got sick or not, we also discovered a few asymptomatic cases of transmission.
