In Turkey and in Istanbul, town planning processes have been significantly influenced by Western planning principles, cultures, and experiences. But those processes gained local meanings in the context of Turkish politics in the modern setting up process.

Why is it important?

The description of their work may reveal the close links of Turkish urban planning with the process of setting up a national identity in the city of Istanbul.

Perspectives

The point of my study is to describe the urban design competition of 1933 and the First Master Plan of 1937. Beyond reminiscences of Western European cities, the city-beautiful type, this study, based on a series of official documents, plan reports and their rhetoric, in particular, investigates the role of foreign planners/urbanists in Istanbul the context of the setting up of nation-state. The description of their work may reveal the close links of Turkish urban planning with the process of setting up a national identity in the city of Istanbul.
