What is it about?

Affordance is a term coming from psychologists to describe how individuals perceive that they can interact with an object. The paper presents a system based on Genetic algorithms which simulate Darwin's evolution theory to gather input from users and use that input to evolve designs (physical objects) towards ones that provide better affordances.

Why is it important?

Engineering design has focused mostly on function, which is a form independent description of what is being designed. Affordance focuses on the form, and how users perceive they can use the object. Thus, both concepts should be used when designing or redesigning an artifact.

Perspectives

I hope readers will see the value of considering affordances and will feel that the approach does allow them to address specific characteristics of a design that were awkward in the past.
