Making function modeling practically usable

What is it about?

Function modelling is an active research area and many different types of function modelling methods are (still) studied, discussed and published academically. However, unfortunately, we don't hear many real life applications of function modelling methods in industry. Why? Is function modelling only discussed in schools? How can we make it more practically usable in industry?
