What is it about?

A geometrical approach is offered for calculation of the inter-crystalline volume using crystallite sizes. By application of the results of XRD analysis, It is calculated that the thickness of grain boundary is about 1.6 nm in case of mechanically milled nano-crystalline copper.

Why is it important?

A new 3D simple geometrical model is proposed for analysis of interface volume in nano-structured materials. This model can calculate inter-crystalline volume considering the fraction of triple junctions and vortex points. The specified equations were stated for this grain shapes: truncated octahedral and prism with hexagonal base.
