What is it about?

This is a thorough review of research on second language research, including a critical evaluation of past and current methods, and an exploration of some new methods which might add to what we already know.

Why is it important?

There is so much word association research available, but it has been affected by a lack of consensus on the best research methods. As a result, it is often very difficult to interpret the findings of word association experiments. The article aims to pick through the current research, identifying the key themes and findings. It is also intended as a guide for future research: we hope that it helps to set out some principles and possibilities for future research. We hope that it will clarify current findings and improve future research.

Perspectives

I'm personally very excited by network approaches to word association. I also think that researchers can benefit from thinking about current results from a usage-based perspective. The paper sets out the rationale for these things.
