What is it about?
Based on the notion of causal complex defended by critical realism, the article proposes opening the securitization theory for explanatory analysis, by establishing a bridge between its traditional discursive dimension and a more empirical dimension of security. The article uses the securitisation of Somali piracy as an example of how the causal analysis of securitisation can contribute to explain some of the dynamics involved in security governance.

Why is it important?
I think that the notion of causal complex and the integration of discourse in causal explanations contribute to establish a bridge between internal disputes and controversies in securitisation studies that still compel analysts to choose between linguistic or sociological versions of securitisation, as if they were absolutely incompatible with each other.
Perspectives
I hope this article can contribute to provide a common ground for integration between linguistic and sociological versions of securitisation, whose disputes have led to an increasingly sterile debate.
