What is it about?

This paper is about how experiences in the workplace influence the way that people save for retirement. It makes three main points. Firstly, having permanent employment and a clear career path encourages saving for retirement. Secondly, It is important to have colleagues who are supportive and an employer who encourages saving for retirement. Thirdly, trust in the employer is relevant.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it highlights how the working environment can influence successful strategies for financial preparations for retirement. It shows that employees with similar socio-economic characteristics can be at very different levels of retirement preparation depending on the security of their previous employment and the support they have received from their employer.

Perspectives

We often think about pension saving in relation to income, age or financial literacy. This paper emphasises that we should include the working environment in pension research. I believe that focusing on encouraging employers to provide pensions advice to employees will be the most effective way of increasing savings rates.
