What is it about?

This author attempts to apply Lefebvre's theory of rhythms (rhythmanalysis) to evaluate the disengagement and activity theories in ageing studies. It is based on research data from ethnographic fieldwork amongst a group of elderly Chinese migrants living in sheltered housing in the UK.

Why is it important?

It provides an additional theoretical perspective on how one could view ageing. The research sample is unique in that the respondents claimed that they are the first amongst their compatriots from Hong Kong who had decided to retire in the UK instead of returning to Hong Kong.

Perspectives

Although the data remained the same, it was quite an eye-opening experience to see how the analysis could be quite different simply because the researcher has herself moved on in her life-course.
