What is it about?

The title Tuhkanti is acknowledged as one of the highest ranking titles in Hittite administration. However, the interpretation of the title has been a matter of controversy among scholars, and various suggestions regarding the identity and the role of the officer have been made. This article revisits the issue on the basis of previous scholarship, taking into account all the attestations of the term in Hittite texts.

Why is it important?

A complete list of all (currently known) attestations is offered for the first time. All attestations are then commented one by one and, even more importantly, they are considered globally. The article aims at a characterisation of the officer, which takes into account all the information that can be deduced from the Hittite sources.
