What is it about?

In the past ten years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of alternative theatres run by young artists in Istanbul. Kurdish theatre has become an important part of this new cultural milieu. This study aims to explore the emergence of Kurdish theatre in Istanbul, its development in the new millennium, the attitude of the authorities and the reactions of audiences. Two Kurdish theatres, Destar Theatre and Theatre Avesta, have been chosen to epitomise their artistic and political commitments, the issues facing Kurdish theatre, the possible solutions.
