What is it about?
T. orientalis is considered to be a benign parasite. We are reporting for the first time that it can cause fatal infection among buffloes. We also propose that Rhipicephalus ticks could act as vectors for this organism.

Why is it important?
This is the first detailed investigation of Oriental theileriosis among buffaloes. We have shown that this organism is also capable of fatal infection, and that the pathogenic mechanisms resemble the other two theileriae (T. parva and T. annulata) which cause heavy losses to livestock industry in many parts of the world.
