Why is it important?

Very little is known about otters in Africa as the focus is always on the high profile species such as elephant, rhino and lion and very few people work on the four species found. The workshop was held at the Mweka College of Wildlife Management, and even here some of the lecturers did not know that otters exist in Africa. The College trains rangers from throughout the continent and otters can now also be included in the course work.
