Why is it important?
This article is important because it deals with newly translated sources from a formative era of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Matelieff's plans for the VOC were important, and included changes in the way the company did business in Asia, the need to establish a central base at convenient location, as well as his proposals to monopolize the trade in nutmeg, mace and cloves.
