Using what at the time were both published and unpublished materials, this article examined what Grotius knew about the Sta. Catarina incident and how this in turn impacted his early thought on sovereignty, the just war and natural rights.

The article reconstructs the early international thought of Grotius which focused on the evolving Dutch relations with Johor and the East Indies in general.
Perspectives
The ideas developed in these early years fed into his Commentary on the Law of Prize and Booty (1604-8) and implicitly also his Mare Liberum of 1609.
