What is it about?

In this paper, we report on meatoplasty technique applied in a series of patients with chronic otorrhoea after a canal wall down mastoidectomy. We have seen benefit from our technique based on a transposition postauricular flap meatoplasty. We describe improvements and benefits in patients with persistently infected radical cavities.

Why is it important?

In our view, the modification of the superiorly based postauricular flap meatoplasty is a last resort tool in the philosophy of open cavity treatments. When inapplicable or after failure, a more time consuming mastoid obliteration could still be considered according to the current trends.

Perspectives

• Meatoplasty is a crucial step in canal wall down tympano-mastoidectomy. • Postauricular flap meatoplasty is valuable management for chronic otorrhoea especially in revision cases. • Satisfactory radical cavity to both patient and physician can be achieved. • Postauricular flap meatoplasty is a last resort in the philosophy of open cavity treatments
