What is it about?

We tested milk from different animals and milk substitutes from different plants to see what would be best for people allergic to cow's milk.

Why is it important?

Many people react to cow's milk. Children in particular need to drink milk but usually stop drinking human milk while still very young. People need to know what the best substitutes are for human and cow's milk.

Perspectives

As an immunologist, throughout the years people have asked me, if they were allergic to cow's milk, can they have A1 or A2 cow's milk, organic or regular cow's milk, goat, cow, sheep or even camel milk? How about plant-based milk substitutes from plants like almond, coconut or soy? The simple answer is that if you are allergic to one type of cow's milk you will likely be allergic to all. If you had to choose, our test results showed that camel milk was the least reactive among the animal milks, and coconut milk was the least reactive of the plant-based substitutes. Some people won't react to the plant-based milk substitutes, but there are a few who may react equally or even worse than they would to a animal milk.
