What is it about?

Using Aquacrop crop model evapotranspiration, precipitation during growing season, growing dynamics and crop yield are calculated using seasonal weather forecast and compared with results of the same simulations performed using measured meteorological data in order to assess efficacy of seasonal weather forecast application.

Why is it important?

From agricultural production point of view it is important to know weather conditions few weeks or few months in advance. Current study showed that, even 6 months forecast is far from perfect its use in crop modelling can be very useful particularly for growing dynamics and yield forecasting.

Perspectives

This publication can be useful for both meteorologists working on numerical weather prediction (since it underlines some weaknesses of seasonal forecasting in crop modelling application) and agronomist interested in application of weather prediction in agricultural production.
