What is it about?

One of the greatest personalities of the history of Oman, the Persian/Arab Gulf, and the Indian Ocean region, J. C. Wilkinson, has published what we should all study: the history of the Arabs in Africa (1820-1890 CE).

Why is it important?

In his conclusion, Wilkinson suggests that [… the Omanis will have to come to terms with its colonial past in the same way as the British and the European powers have had to …] (444): a political process – this particular one – that would not be viable with the same methodologies and patterns. What we agree is the deep need of a new perspective on the links inside the Indian Ocean region.

Perspectives

This book is strongly suggested not only for those interested in Eastern and Central Africa, but also about Arabia and the Indian Ocean as well.
